Why attend SYDW: Industry

Rachel Rowney

Industry guests form a vital part of SuperyachtDESIGN Week, being held this year from 28 – 30 June at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. The event programme has been honed to reflect the needs of this area of the market, with a mix of networking opportunities and informative, educational seminars about the industry.

“The event had inspiring talks and interactive sessions that encourage new thought and new connections,” Erik Calissendorff of Plejd noted after the event in 2015. Similarly, Azzurra Cantalupi of Cantalupi Lighting remarked that SYDW is “A valuable opportunity to meet designers directly and make good connections.” The daily programme of coffee breaks, lunch hotspots and drink receptions provide the opportunities to meet and network with fellow attendees.

In addition to the abundance of networking opportunities, several workshop sessions are expertly crafted for industry guests, with designers and shipyards providing insight into their processes and needs.

How can industry suppliers best prepare for future owners? Patrick Coote, Blohm+Voss and Marnix Hoekstra, Vripack will lead a session that looks at what the new wave of superyacht owners want from their vessels. How can we ensure our industry evolves to cater to the needs and desires of the next generation of owners? A session vital for designers, shipyards and suppliers, this session will offer insight in how to future-proof a brand.

‘The Buying Process Q&A’ is a twist on the traditional ‘Designer Q&A’ workshop sessions that take place at the event. In this session, Jack Canning of Redman Whiteley Dixon and Caroline Stirling, Seymour Diamond will answer questions on what design studios look for when purchasing for their projects. This workshop will be an opportunity for industry suppliers to speak to the buying teams from top design studios.

How can designers, suppliers and owners protect themselves when involved in a project? Superyacht legal experts Rebecca Costen and David Wilkinson of Clyde & Co will lead ‘Designing the Perfect Contract’ an instructional workshop outlining the fundamental parts of legal contracts and what our industry needs to know when drawing up agreements.

How will virtual reality change how owners see designs and envisage the yachts? Designer Andrew Trujillo and William Dunne of iDEA will explore this in the workshop session ‘An iDEA for superyachts?’. iDEA is a multi-disciplinary design firm that uses augmented reality, visualisation, 3D printing and animation to display projects and objects in a revolutionary way.
